KB to Bytes Converter

All tools

Kilobytes to bytes, both ways: multiply by 1,000 or by 1,024.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

Quick answer

1 KB = 1,000 bytes (decimal) and 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes (binary). To convert KB to bytes, multiply by 1,000. To convert KiB to bytes, multiply by 1,024. Example: 4 KB = 4,000 bytes, while 4 KiB = 4,096 bytes.

Decimal · KB × 1,000

4,000 bytes

Binary · KiB × 1,024

4,096 bytes

4 × 1,000 = 4,000 bytes. 4 × 1,024 = 4,096 bytes.

How many bytes in a KB?

Bytes = KB × 1,000. Bytes = KiB × 1,024 (2^10). The SI kilobyte is 1,000 bytes. The kibibyte is 1,024 bytes, and Windows and a lot of other software still print KB for it. To go from bytes to kilobytes, use the bytes to KB converter. To go up a step, use the KB to MB converter.

  • 1 KB is 1,000 bytes decimal.
  • 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes, which is 2.4% more.
  • 512 KiB is 524,288 bytes; 512 KB is 512,000 bytes.
  • Fast estimate: move the decimal point three places right for decimal kilobytes.

Is a KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?

Both are in use. The kilo prefix means 1,000 in the SI system, and that is what storage vendors and network speeds use. Computer memory comes in powers of two, so 1,024 became common, and the IEC name for it is kibibyte (KiB). Always check which one a tool means before comparing two numbers. Both columns above are computed from the same input.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 KB equal to 1024 bytes?

In the binary system, yes: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes, and many programs print that as KB. In the SI system, 1 KB is 1,000 bytes.

Is 1 kB 1000 or 1024?

The SI kilobyte (kB) is 1,000 bytes. The kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. The unit written KB can mean either, depending on the software.

What is 1 byte equal to?

1 byte is 8 bits. It can hold one of 256 values, enough for a single character in many text encodings.

How many bytes is 4 KB?

4 KB = 4,000 bytes in decimal. 4 KiB = 4,096 bytes in binary, a common file system block size.

How many bytes is 100 KB?

100 KB = 100,000 bytes in decimal. 100 KiB = 102,400 bytes in binary.

How many KB is 2048 bytes?

2,048 bytes = 2.048 KB in decimal, and exactly 2 KiB in binary.

How many bits are in a KB?

1 KB = 8,000 bits. 1 KiB = 8,192 bits. The bits to bytes converter covers the other direction.

Does this converter upload my numbers?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with exact integer arithmetic, so nothing you type leaves the page.
