Reference
A byte count, rewritten as megabytes. Decimal and binary, from the same number of bytes.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
Quick answer
1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes (decimal, SI) or 1,048,576 bytes (binary, MiB). To convert bytes to MB, divide by 1,000,000. To get mebibytes, divide by 1,048,576.
How to convert bytes to megabytes
Megabytes = bytes ÷ 1,000,000. Mebibytes = bytes ÷ 1,048,576 (2^20). Example: 5,000,000 bytes is exactly 5 MB and about 4.768372 MiB. The converter follows the byte count, so changing the unit does not just divide the number you typed. If you already have a figure labeled KB and only want it divided by 1,000 or 1,024, use the KB to MB converter.
- Write down the byte count.
- Divide by 1,000,000 for decimal megabytes (MB).
- Divide by 1,048,576 for binary mebibytes (MiB), the unit Windows and RAM sizes usually call MB.
- Say which one you used. MB and MiB differ by 4.8576%.

MB to bytes (megabytes to bytes)
Going the other way, multiply by 1,000,000 for decimal megabytes or by 1,048,576 for mebibytes. The MB to bytes converter does it for any number.

|---|---|---|
| 1 MB / MiB | 1,000,000 | 1,048,576 |

Decimal and binary
Storage vendors, networking, macOS, and the SI prefixes use powers of 1,000. A megabyte is 1,000 kilobytes and a gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes. Memory, Windows, and the IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. A mebibyte is 1,024 kibibytes. Software often prints MB when it means MiB. The two results on this page are the same bytes, named both ways.
A log line and a photo
A 1,200-byte log event is 0.0012 MB. A million of those events is 1.2 MB decimal, before compression and before you multiply by the day. A 3,000,000-byte image is exactly 3 MB decimal and about 2.861023 MiB. When a dashboard and a vendor invoice disagree, write the byte count down first and convert from that.
Frequently asked questions
How many bytes are in 1 MB?
1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes in decimal (SI) units. 1 MiB, the binary unit, is 1,048,576 bytes (2^20), and Windows and many tools label that binary unit MB.
How do I convert bytes to MB?
Divide the number of bytes by 1,000,000 for MB, or by 1,048,576 for MiB. For example, 5,000,000 bytes = 5 MB ≈ 4.768372 MiB.
Is 1 MB 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes?
By the SI and IEC standards, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes and 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes. Drive makers, networks and macOS use the decimal megabyte. Windows and RAM sizes use the binary unit but often still print MB.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
A megabyte (MB) is 10^6 = 1,000,000 bytes. A mebibyte (MiB) is 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes. 1 MiB is 4.8576% larger than 1 MB.
How many bytes is 10 MB?
10 MB = 10,000,000 bytes. 10 MiB = 10,485,760 bytes.
How many bits are in a megabyte?
1 MB = 8,000,000 bits, which is 8 megabits (Mb). 1 MiB = 8,388,608 bits. Network speeds are quoted in bits, so a 100 Mbps link moves about 12.5 MB per second.
How many MB are in 1 GB?
1 GB = 1,000 MB in decimal units. 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB in binary units. The MB to GB converter shows both.
Does this converter upload my numbers?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with exact integer arithmetic, so nothing you type leaves the page.
Is 1 KB equal to 1024 bytes?
In the binary system, yes: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes, and many programs print that as KB. In the SI system, 1 KB is 1,000 bytes. The KB to bytes converter shows both.
Is MiB the same as MB?
No. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes and a megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes. Windows often prints MB for the binary unit, which is why the two get mixed up.
What is 1 byte equal to?
1 byte is 8 bits. It can hold one of 256 values. See the bits to bytes converter.
Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB?
Both, depending on the unit. 1 GB is 1,000 MB (decimal). 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB (binary), and some software prints that as GB. The GB to MB converter shows both.
Is 1 TB 1024 MB?
No. 1 TB is 1,000,000 MB in decimal units and 1 TiB is 1,048,576 MiB in binary units. 1,024 MB is about one thousandth of a terabyte. See the TB to MB converter.

Bytes to megabits (B to Mb)
A lowercase “b” means bits, so MB (megabytes) and Mb (megabits) are different units. One byte is 8 bits, so to convert bytes to megabits multiply by 8 and divide by 1,000,000: Mb = bytes × 8 ÷ 1,000,000. Network speeds are usually quoted in megabits per second, while file sizes are quoted in megabytes.
| Bytes (B) | Megabytes (MB) | Megabits (Mb) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.000001 | 0.000008 |
| 125,000 | 0.125 | 1 |
