Reference
A byte count, rewritten as gigabytes: divide by 1,000,000,000 or by 1,073,741,824.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
Quick answer
GB = bytes ÷ 1,000,000,000 (decimal). GiB = bytes ÷ 1,073,741,824 (binary, 2^30). Example: 1,073,741,824 bytes is about 1.073742 GB and exactly 1 GiB.
Formula for converting bytes to gigabytes
Gigabytes = bytes ÷ 1,000,000,000 (10^9). Gibibytes = bytes ÷ 1,073,741,824 (2^30). Say which one you used. A gibibyte is 7.3741824% larger than a gigabyte. If your number is already in megabytes, the MB to GB converter is the shorter hop.
- Write down the byte count.
- Divide by 1,000,000,000 for decimal gigabytes (GB).
- Divide by 1,073,741,824 for binary gibibytes (GiB), the unit Windows and RAM sizes usually call GB.
- Fast estimate: move the decimal point nine places left for decimal gigabytes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for converting bytes to gigabytes?
Divide the bytes by 1,000,000,000 for decimal gigabytes (GB). Divide by 1,073,741,824 for binary gibibytes (GiB).
How many bytes are in 1 GB?
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30).
Is GB or bytes more?
A gigabyte is more. One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes in decimal units, or 1,073,741,824 bytes if the unit is binary.
What are the prefixes for bytes?
The SI prefixes are kilo (10^3), mega (10^6), giga (10^9) and tera (10^12). The IEC binary prefixes are kibi (2^10), mebi (2^20), gibi (2^30) and tebi (2^40). The table on this page lists the byte counts.
1073741824 bytes to GB?
1,073,741,824 bytes = about 1.073742 GB in decimal units, and exactly 1 GiB in binary units.
How many GB is 5,000,000,000 bytes?
5,000,000,000 bytes = exactly 5 GB in decimal units, or about 4.656613 GiB in binary units.
Why do two tools show different GB for the same file?
One of them divides by 1,000,000,000 and the other by 1,073,741,824. Both may print GB. Compare the raw byte count to see which divisor was used.
Does this converter upload my numbers?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with exact integer arithmetic, so nothing you type leaves the page.
