Quick answer
1 GB = 1,000 MB (decimal) and 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB (binary). To convert MB to GB, divide by 1,000. To convert MiB to GiB, divide by 1,024. Example: 2,560 MB = 2.56 GB, and 2,560 MiB = 2.5 GiB.
How to convert MB to GB
GB = MB ÷ 1,000. GiB = MiB ÷ 1,024. Same rule as KB to MB, one prefix further up. Use it when a disk, a dataset, or a retention estimate is already in megabytes and the conversation has moved to gigabytes.
- A 512 MB dataset is 0.512 GB, or exactly 0.5 GiB if it was 512 MiB.
- 2,560 MB of logs is 2.56 GB decimal and 2.5 GiB binary.
- 10,240 MB is 10.24 GB, or exactly 10 GiB. That 0.24 GB is the whole argument between the two standards.

MB vs GB: which is bigger?
GB is bigger. One gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes in decimal units, and one gibibyte is 1,024 mebibytes in binary units. A 2,560 MB download is 2.56 GB. When two numbers have different units, convert both to the same unit before you decide which is more.

For any other number, use the GB to MB converter. One prefix up, the GB to TB converter does the same for terabytes.

Where the invoices use which one
Consumer drive labels are decimal: a 1 TB disk is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 931.32 GiB. Cloud storage prices are often quoted per GB while the billed gigabyte is 2^30 bytes, a GiB. This page shows both quotients of the number you typed. If you need the billed footprint of a log stream, the log storage cost estimator applies a price to both.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB are in 1 GB?
There are 1,000 MB in 1 GB (decimal). There are 1,024 MiB in 1 GiB (binary), which a lot of software still calls a GB.
How do I convert MB to GB?
Divide by 1,000 for decimal gigabytes, or by 1,024 for gibibytes. 5,120 MB = 5.12 GB, or exactly 5 GiB.
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
The standard decimal gigabyte is 1,000 MB. The binary gibibyte is 1,024 MiB. Windows and RAM sizes use the binary unit and label it GB.
How many GB is 500 MB?
500 MB = 0.5 GB in decimal, or about 0.488281 GiB in binary.
How many GB is 4,096 MB?
4,096 MB = 4.096 GB in decimal, and exactly 4 GiB in binary.
How many bytes are in 1 GB?
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30).
Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Divided by 1,073,741,824, that is about 931.32 GiB, and Windows prints it as 931 GB.
Should I plan capacity in GB or GiB?
Match the bill. If the vendor defines a gigabyte as 2^30 bytes, use the binary column and write GiB in the design doc so the next reader does not correct it.
Is MB or GB bigger?
GB is bigger. 1 GB = 1,000 MB in decimal units, and 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB in binary units.
How many MB are in 1 GB of data?
1 GB of data is 1,000 MB (decimal). If the tool uses binary units, 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. The GB to MB converter shows both.
