Bytes to KB Converter

All tools

A byte count as kilobytes: divide by 1,000 or by 1,024.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

Quick answer

KB = bytes ÷ 1,000 (decimal). KiB = bytes ÷ 1,024 (binary). Example: 2,048 bytes = 2.048 KB, and exactly 2 KiB.

Decimal · ÷ 1,000

2.048 KB

Binary · ÷ 1,024

2 KiB

2,048 ÷ 1,000 = 2.048 KB. 2,048 ÷ 1,024 = 2 KiB.

How to convert bytes to KB

Kilobytes = bytes ÷ 1,000. Kibibytes = bytes ÷ 1,024 (2^10). This page divides the number you type both ways and labels each result. For the reverse, use the KB to bytes converter. To go further up, use the byte to MB converter or the bytes to GB converter.

  • 1,500 bytes is 1.5 KB decimal and about 1.464844 KiB.
  • 4,096 bytes is 4.096 KB decimal and exactly 4 KiB.
  • 65,536 bytes is 65.536 KB decimal and exactly 64 KiB.
  • Fast estimate: move the decimal point three places left.

Decimal and binary kilobytes

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the SI system, and that is what drive labels and network speeds use. A kibibyte is 1,024 bytes (2^10), and it is the unit Windows and RAM sizes usually mean even when they print KB. The two answers on this page come from the same bytes, named both ways.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert bytes to KB?

Divide the bytes by 1,000 for decimal kilobytes, or by 1,024 for binary kibibytes. 5,000 bytes = 5 KB, or about 4.882813 KiB.

How many KB is 1,024 bytes?

1,024 bytes = 1.024 KB in decimal, and exactly 1 KiB in binary.

Is 1 KB equal to 1024 bytes?

In the binary system, yes (1 KiB). In the SI system, 1 KB is 1,000 bytes.

How many KB is 500 bytes?

500 bytes = 0.5 KB in decimal, or about 0.488281 KiB in binary.

How many KB is 1 MB?

1 MB = 1,000 KB in decimal units, and 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB in binary units. See the MB to KB converter.

What is 1 byte equal to?

1 byte is 8 bits.

Why does a file show a different size in two programs?

One may divide by 1,000 and the other by 1,024. The byte count is the same. Convert from the bytes to compare them fairly.

Does this converter upload my numbers?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with exact integer arithmetic, so nothing you type leaves the page.
