Terabytes to gigabytes, both ways: multiply by 1,000 or by 1,024.

Quick answer
1 TB = 1,000 GB (decimal) and 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB (binary). To convert TB to GB, multiply by 1,000. To convert TiB to GiB, multiply by 1,024. Example: 2.5 TB = 2,500 GB, while 2.5 TiB = 2,560 GiB.
How many GB in a TB?
GB = TB × 1,000. GiB = TiB × 1,024. This page multiplies the number you type both ways and labels each result, so a drive label and an operating system can be compared without guessing. To go the other direction, use the GB to TB converter. For one prefix lower, see GB to MB.
- 1 TB is 1,000 GB decimal and 1,024 GiB if the unit is binary.
- 2 TB is 2,000 GB decimal and 2,048 GiB binary.
- 0.5 TB is 500 GB decimal, or 512 GiB if the half terabyte were TiB.
- Fast estimate: move the decimal point three places right. 3.2 TB is about 3,200 GB.

Why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB
A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,073,741,824 (2^30) and prints the result as GB, which is about 931.32 GiB. Nothing is missing. The label is decimal and the operating system is binary. The gap is 2.4% at the kilobyte step and about 9.95% at the terabyte step.
Frequently asked questions
How many GB makes 1 TB?
1 TB is 1,000 GB in decimal units. In binary units, 1 TiB is 1,024 GiB. Drive makers use the decimal terabyte.
Is 1024 GB the same as 1 TB?
Only in the binary system: 1,024 GiB is exactly 1 TiB. In decimal units, 1,024 GB is 1.024 TB. The two names get mixed up because many tools print GB and TB for binary values.
Is 100 GB equal to 1 TB?
No. 100 GB is 0.1 TB, one tenth of a terabyte. It takes 1,000 GB to make 1 TB in decimal units.
Is 1 TB overkill for a laptop?
It depends on what you store. Documents, browsing and a handful of apps fit in far less. A large photo library, video projects, games or local datasets can fill 1 TB. Check the size of your own files first, and remember that a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB in Windows.
Why does a 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,073,741,824 and prints about 931.32, labeled GB. The correct label for that figure is GiB.
How many GB is 2 TB?
2 TB = 2,000 GB in decimal. 2 TiB = 2,048 GiB in binary.
How many MB are in a TB?
1 TB = 1,000,000 MB in decimal. 1 TiB = 1,048,576 MiB in binary. The TB to MB converter shows both.
Does this converter upload my numbers?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with exact integer arithmetic, so nothing you type leaves the page.
