Why Windows shows “MB” that are really MiB

Drive makers and most websites use decimal MB (1,000,000 bytes). Windows Explorer uses binary math (powers of 1,024) and still prints “MB”. A file Windows calls “1.00 MB” is often exactly 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes = 1.048576 MB. No data is missing — the label mixes units. See MB vs MiB and GiB to GB for the same gap one step up. For plain decimal sizes, use the byte to MB converter on the homepage or byte to MB and KB to MB.

FAQ

How many MB is 1 MiB?

1 MiB is 1.048576 MB (1,048,576 bytes). A mebibyte is about 4.86% larger than a megabyte.

Is MiB the same as MB?

No. MiB (mebibyte) is binary: 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes. MB (megabyte) is decimal: 10^6 = 1,000,000 bytes. They are close but not equal.

How many MiB is 1 MB?

1 MB is about 0.9537 MiB (1,000,000 ÷ 1,048,576).

Why does Windows show MB that are really MiB?

Windows Explorer divides file sizes by powers of 1,024 (binary) but still labels the result MB or GB. So the number is MiB/GiB; the label is wrong. Linux and macOS often show the correct MiB/GiB labels.

What is 1024 MiB in MB?

1024 MiB × 1.048576 = 1,073.741824 MB, which is exactly 1 GiB in binary terms (and about 1.074 GB decimal).
