Kilobytes to megabytes, both ways: divide by 1,000 or by 1,024.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
Quick answer
1 MB = 1,000 KB (decimal) and 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB (binary). To convert KB to MB, divide by 1,000. To convert KiB to MiB, divide by 1,024. Example: 1,536 KB = 1.536 MB, while 1,536 KiB = 1.5 MiB.
How to convert KB to MB
MB = KB ÷ 1,000. MiB = KiB ÷ 1,024. This page divides the number you type both ways. It does not take a decimal kilobyte, turn it into bytes, and then express those bytes as mebibytes. That is a different question, and the byte to MB converter answers it.
- 512 KB is 0.512 MB decimal, or exactly 0.5 MiB if the 512 were KiB.
- A 5,000 KB export is 5 MB decimal and about 4.882813 MiB.
- 102,400 KB is 102.4 MB decimal, or exactly 100 MiB.
- Fast estimate: move the decimal point three places left. 8,500 KB is about 8.5 MB.

KB or MB: which is bigger?
MB is bigger. One megabyte is 1,000 kilobytes in decimal units, and one mebibyte is 1,024 kibibytes in binary units. A kilobyte is the smaller unit, so the same file has a larger number in KB than in MB. A 2,500 KB photo is 2.5 MB.
KB to MB to GB chart
Each step up divides by 1,000 in decimal units. Read across to see the same size in all three. The KB to GB converter covers any other number.
| Kilobytes | Megabytes (MB) | Gigabytes (GB) |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 KB | 1 MB | 0.001 GB |
| 10,000 KB | 10 MB | 0.01 GB |
| 100,000 KB | 100 MB | 0.1 GB |
| 1,000,000 KB | 1,000 MB | 1 GB |
| 10,000,000 KB | 10,000 MB | 10 GB |
| 1,000,000,000 KB | 1,000,000 MB | 1,000 GB |
Which divisor people mean
Both are in the wild. Drive labels, object storage, and network speeds use 1,000. RAM and a lot of desktop software use 1,024 and still print KB and MB. If a file dialog says 1,536 KB and you expected a round number, the binary column is the one that says 1.5 MiB.
The gap is small at a kilobyte and compounds as the unit grows. 1,000 KB is 1 MB decimal and about 0.976563 MiB. By the time you reach terabytes, the quiet choice of 1,000 versus 1,024 is a real fraction of the bill. The MB to GB converter shows the next step.
Frequently asked questions
How many KB are in 1 MB?
There are 1,000 KB in 1 MB (decimal). There are 1,024 KiB in 1 MiB (binary), which Windows labels as 1,024 KB.
How do I convert KB to MB?
Divide the kilobytes by 1,000 for decimal megabytes, or by 1,024 for binary mebibytes. 2,048 KB = 2.048 MB, or exactly 2 MiB.
Is 1 MB 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?
The standard decimal megabyte is 1,000 KB. The binary mebibyte is 1,024 KiB, and plenty of software still calls that unit MB.
How many MB is 500 KB?
500 KB = 0.5 MB in decimal, or about 0.488281 MiB in binary.
How many MB is 1,024 KB?
1,024 KB = 1.024 MB in decimal, and exactly 1 MiB in binary.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
A kilobyte (KB) is 1,000 bytes. A kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. KiB is the unambiguous name for the binary unit.
Why does Windows show a different size than the drive label?
The label is decimal. Windows divides by 1,024 and keeps the decimal names, so the same bytes look smaller. Compare the byte count when the difference matters.
Are my numbers uploaded?
No. The page calculates in your browser.
Is 1000 KB equal to 1 MB?
Yes in decimal units: 1 MB = 1,000 KB. In binary units, 1,000 KiB is about 0.976563 MiB, because 1 MiB takes 1,024 KiB.
Which is bigger, KB or MB?
MB is bigger. 1 MB = 1,000 KB (decimal) or 1,024 KiB (binary).
How can I convert an image from KB to MB?
Divide the image size in KB by 1,000. A 2,500 KB image is 2.5 MB. To make an image smaller instead, use the photo resize in KB tool.
How to get file size in MB?
Check the file size in your file manager (Properties on Windows, Get Info on macOS). If it shows KB, divide by 1,000 for MB. If it shows bytes, use the byte to MB converter.
Is 1 TB 1024 MB?
No. 1 TB is 1,000,000 MB in decimal units, and 1 TiB is 1,048,576 MiB. 1,024 MB is about one thousandth of a terabyte. See the TB to MB converter.
