Gigabytes to megabytes, both ways: multiply by 1,000 or by 1,024.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
Quick answer
1 GB = 1,000 MB (decimal) and 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB (binary). To convert GB to MB, multiply by 1,000. To convert GiB to MiB, multiply by 1,024. Example: 2.5 GB = 2,500 MB, while 2.5 GiB = 2,560 MiB.
How many MB in a GB?
There are 1,000 MB in 1 GB in decimal units, and 1,024 MiB in 1 GiB in binary units. Most phone, drive and network figures use the 1,000 version. The table below lists both.
How to convert GB to MB
MB = GB × 1,000. MiB = GiB × 1,024. This page multiplies the number you type both ways and labels each result. To go the other direction, use the MB to GB converter. For terabytes, see GB to TB.
- 0.5 GB is 500 MB decimal, or 512 MiB if the 0.5 were GiB.
- 2.5 GB is 2,500 MB decimal and 2,560 MiB binary.
- 16 GB is 16,000 MB decimal and 16,384 MiB binary.
- Fast estimate: move the decimal point three places right. 4.7 GB is about 4,700 MB.

GB or MB: which is bigger?
GB is bigger. A gigabyte holds 1,000 megabytes (decimal) or 1,024 mebibytes (binary). A 4.7 GB video is 4,700 MB.
Where phones, drives and clouds disagree
Drive labels, many phone storage figures and network plans use the decimal gigabyte, 1,000 MB. RAM sizes and a lot of desktop software use the binary one, 1,024 MiB, and still print GB. A cloud bill may quote GB while billing 2^30-byte gigabytes. Check which one your vendor means before you compare two numbers. The log storage cost estimator prints both for a log stream.
Frequently asked questions
How many MB are in 1 GB?
There are 1,000 MB in 1 GB (decimal). There are 1,024 MiB in 1 GiB (binary), which a lot of software still calls a GB.
How do I convert GB to MB?
Multiply the gigabytes by 1,000 for decimal megabytes, or by 1,024 for binary mebibytes. 2 GB = 2,000 MB, while 2 GiB = 2,048 MiB.
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
The standard decimal gigabyte is 1,000 MB. The binary gibibyte is 1,024 MiB. Windows and RAM sizes use the binary unit and label it GB.
How many MB is 2 GB?
2 GB = 2,000 MB in decimal. 2 GiB = 2,048 MiB in binary.
How many MB is 4 GB?
4 GB = 4,000 MB in decimal. 4 GiB = 4,096 MiB in binary.
How many MB is 0.5 GB?
0.5 GB = 500 MB in decimal, or 512 MiB if the half gigabyte is binary.
How many bytes are in 1 GB?
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30).
Does this converter upload my numbers?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with exact integer arithmetic, so nothing you type leaves the page.
Is 1 GB more than 1 MB?
Yes. 1 GB is 1,000 times more than 1 MB in decimal units, and 1,024 times more in binary units.
What is the difference between a gigabyte and a megabyte?
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000 megabytes (MB) in decimal units. In bytes, 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 and 1 MB is 1,000,000. The binary versions, GiB and MiB, are 1,073,741,824 and 1,048,576 bytes.
Is 4096 MB equal to 4 GB?
Exactly 4 GiB in binary units, because 4 × 1,024 = 4,096. In decimal units 4,096 MB is 4.096 GB, and 4 GB is 4,000 MB.
Is using 1 GB of data a day a lot?
Over a month that is about 30 GB (30 × 1 GB). Whether that is a lot depends on your plan. Messaging and browsing use far less. Streaming video can reach 1 GB in a few hours. Compare 30 GB with your monthly allowance.
How many GB is a lot of storage?
It depends on what you keep. Documents and email fit in a few GB. Photo libraries, games and video projects can take hundreds of GB or terabytes. Add up the size of your own files before you choose a drive. See the GB to TB converter for larger sizes.
Is 100 GB a lot of storage?
100 GB is 100,000 MB, or 0.1 TB. That is plenty for documents and many apps, and small for large game libraries or video footage.
