Quick answer
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes (decimal) and 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary, 2^30). To convert GB to bytes, multiply by 1,000,000,000. To convert GiB to bytes, multiply by 1,073,741,824. Example: 4 GB = 4,000,000,000 bytes, while 4 GiB = 4,294,967,296 bytes.
How many bytes are in a gigabyte?
Bytes = GB × 1,000,000,000. Bytes = GiB × 1,073,741,824. Drive makers, networks and macOS use the decimal gigabyte. Windows, RAM sizes and many tools use the binary one and still print GB. To go from bytes back to gigabytes, use the bytes to GB converter.
- 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes decimal.
- 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is 7.3741824% more.
- An 8 GB memory module is 8,589,934,592 bytes if the 8 is binary.
- Fast estimate: move the decimal point nine places right for decimal gigabytes.

Values marked ≈ are rounded to six decimal places. Unmarked values are exact.
Why 1 GB is not 1,024 bytes
The factor 1,024 is one prefix step, from byte to kibibyte. A gigabyte is three prefix steps above the byte, so the factor is 1,000 × 1,000 × 1,000 in decimal units and 1,024 × 1,024 × 1,024 in binary units. Mixing up the number of steps is the usual reason a conversion looks wrong by a factor of a million.
Gigabytes and gigabits
GB means gigabytes, a size. Gb or Gbit means gigabits, and Gbps means gigabits per second, a speed. One gigabyte is 8 gigabits. To turn a size into a transfer time, see the download time calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many bytes are in 1 GB?
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes in decimal units. 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes in binary units.
Is 1 GB equal to 1024 bytes?
No. 1,024 bytes is 1 KiB, about 0.000001024 GB. A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (decimal) or 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary).
How many gbps is 1 GB?
GB is a size and Gbps is a speed, so they are not interchangeable. 1 GB is 8 gigabits (Gb). A 1 Gbps link needs 8 seconds to move 1 GB at line rate, and an 8 Gbps link needs 1 second.
How many bytes is 2 GB?
2 GB = 2,000,000,000 bytes. 2 GiB = 2,147,483,648 bytes.
How many bytes is 16 GB?
16 GB = 16,000,000,000 bytes. 16 GiB = 17,179,869,184 bytes.
How many MB are in 1 GB?
1 GB = 1,000 MB in decimal units. 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB in binary units.
What is the formula for GB to bytes?
Multiply the gigabytes by 1,000,000,000. For gibibytes, multiply by 1,073,741,824.
Does this converter upload my numbers?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with exact integer arithmetic, so nothing you type leaves the page.
